About the Blog's Founder and Namesake, John-Paul Boyd


John-Paul Boyd founded this blog in 2008, which he maintained until mid-July 2016.  He is the executive director of the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family, an independent non-profit organization affiliated with the University of Calgary, and a member of the bars of British Columbia and Alberta. Prior to joining the Institute, John-Paul practiced for thirteen years as a litigator, arbitrator, collaborative practitioner, mediator and parenting coordinator in Vancouver. John-Paul practiced family law exclusively since being called to the bar; he took his training as a mediator in 2005, his training as an arbitrator in 2011 and his formal training as a collaborative lawyer in 2012. He was a founding director of the BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society, the Family Law Arbitrators Group Society and the BC Hear the Child Society.

John-Paul is a fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and a member of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and the Canadian Bar Association. He has served on the editorial board of the Continuing Legal Education Society's Family Practice Manual, the Provincial Court's Family Law Rules Committee and the Attorney General's Family Law Act Advisory Group. He is the founding author of the public legal education wiki JP Boyd on Family Law, first published as JP Boyd's BC Family Law Resource in 2001, and this, its syndicated companion blog.

John-Paul is a frequent writer and frequent speaker on family law topics, and has presented to the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia, the Law Society of British Columbia's legal training course, the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, the Federation of Law Societies of Canada's National Family Law Program, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, the courts of British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba, and the National Judicial Institute. His written work has appeared in publications including The Lawyers Weekly, BarTalkThe AdvocateUBC Law Review and Canadian Family Law Quarterly. He is the author of "Obtaining Reliable and Repeatable SSAG Calculations," published by the Department of Justice, the author of Child Support in BC and Child Protection in BC, published by the People's Law School, and an author of Guide to the New BC Family Law Act, published by the Legal Services Society.

John-Paul has been listed by the peer-reviewed Best Lawyers since 2010 and is a recipient of the CBA's National Pro Bono Service Award, the UBC Law Alumni Association's Outstanding Young Alumnus Award and the CBABC's Harry Rankin, QC Pro Bono Award. In a 2012 report of the BC Public Legal Education and Information Working Group, John-Paul was named as one of the six major providers of public legal education on family law in British Columbia, along with the Legal Services Society, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ministry of Justice, the University of Victoria Law Centre and the Justice Education Society.
